Eventually he found himself alone with the last surviving prison officer, Gary Wilson; the other prisoners and prison officers, along with prison physician Dr. Colin Thompson (and, presumably, the briefly-mentioned but unseen Prison Governor), having all died. In spite of the fact that prison rules and regulations now no longer applied, Wilson refused to release Tom who, as far as he was concerned, was still a prisoner of Her Majesty's Government. Gary resented the fact that Tom had survived the virus, and was determined to do his duty and ensure that his prisoner served the remainder of his sentence. Tom escaped after killing Gary and made his way home, only to discover that his mother had died from the virus.

After retrieving a bag containing money and a pistol, he moves on, eventually getting picked up by a couple who pass by him. While looking for snacks, the woman looks in his bag and finds his gun. A struggle ensues, with Tom getting sprayed in the face with hair spray and shoved out of the moving vehicle onto the road. He is found by Anya, who pulls him from the road and cleans his head wounds. Soon after, Greg and Abby arrive, and he joins them with Anya. His stone faced mannerisms and total lack of concern quickly put him at odds with all of the group, though they don't hesistate to call upon him to defend them when needed. He develops protective feelings towards Abby and definately has a bond with Anya, but remains outwardly cold and ruthless to all observers.

Throughout it all, Tom keeps one eye on an exit, and the other on Anya, hoping he can gain her affection. In episode 6, Tom is told to find Peter and he does, but Whittaker convinces Peter that Tom is lying about his mother and only wants to hurt him.
